Taller, heavier, wider and longer than any other passenger ship ever built, the much anticipated cruise liner, the ‘Oasis of the Seas’ has finally set sail for Miami today. Costing almost £1bn, the magnificent 1,200 foot ship was commissioned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and will begin carrying passengers from December 2009. The ship can carry up to 9000 including crew and boasts facilities such as an ocean front theatre, 21 swimming pools, an aqua park, an ice rink, an on board ‘Central Park’, nightclubs, casinos, over 24 restaurants and the first ever cupcake shop at sea. Five times the size of the Titanic, the ‘Oasis of the Seas’ is one perfectly and beautifully designed ship.

Once the reserve of the very rich or very old, the popularity of cruises is at an all time high and nowadays there are cruise deals to suit every taste and every budget. Not all of us are going to be able to afford the five star luxury of the ‘Oasis of the Seas’ but there are still some fantastic deals to be had. If you’ve never been on a cruise before, there are a few things to pack along with your holiday clothes to ensure your trip is as enjoyable as possible;

Sea Sickness Pills: Nowadays, most of the huge liners like Oasis of the Seas have built-in motion stabilizing devices to prevent boat movement. However, there will always be some movement in very rough seas which will mean an uncomfortable trip for those prone to nausea. Pack some decent travel sickness pills and you’ll never need to worry.

Money: Regardless of the fact many luxury cruises are now all inclusive you’ll be surprised just how often you need a bit of cash particularly for excursions, tips and presents.
A Good Book: You will never be short of things to do on board, but having a good book to hand is often a God-send when your energy levels are dwindling. When you’ve been active all day you need to relax at some point.

Smart Clothes: There are some five star cruises that may ask that you wear smart clothes the whole time outside of your cabin and even the most casual of cruises will expect you dress smartly on at least some occasions, like evening dinner. It always pays to take at least two good outfits so you have something smart to change into should the need arise.
Walking Shoes: At 1200 feet, no other cruise ship comes near to the ‘Oasis of the Seas’ but even on a modest sized ship you’ll find that you’ll cover a great deal of distance over a day onboard. Of course, a good pair of shoes will come into their own on excursions on land and you’ll never regret packing them after a good few hours on your feet. It’s something that people often forget to bring and regret it almost straight away.

Whether your budget stretches to ‘Oasis of the Seas’ or a more modest cruise you can expect the experience of a lifetime so don’t forget to pack that camera!

There are certain times of the year when it is more advantageous from a financial point of view to take a holiday and that includes a ski holiday. When considering your ski holiday there are times that you should avoid if you want to save money. The peak season for skiing holidays are Christmas, New Year and February half term, it is these dates in the calendar that you should avoid as the demand completely outstrips the supply and naturally the prices are at their highest.

The school half term places the greatest demand on ski resorts and this season all schools in England and Wales have chosen the same half term week, February 13th.  Naturally taking children on a ski holiday is one of the best adventures that they can have and getting them into skiing when they are young is the best thing that you can do for them, they will thank you forever! So if you want to take the kids on a ski holiday and feel that paying the price for half term is just too much to bear, Easter is a much better bet and Easter Sunday falls on April the 4th next year. Do not worry too much about the snow conditions, there is usually plenty about and if you choose a higher resort, you can be almost guaranteed snow, the place to find out is at your ski holiday specialist.

There are many ski enthusiasts and lots of first timers that will not have this problem, the children may be off your hands, or you have a willing grand parent who will entertain them when you are on your skiing holiday! For these lucky folk mid January is the time when you should be planning your ski holiday. At this time the snow cover is almost always good even in the lower resorts and the prices are at their best. March is also a good time too, offering longer days and lots of warmer sunshine, again talk to your ski holiday specialist he can find you  a low cost, high  glacial resort, pre Christmas that may mean you can go on two ski holidays, now there’s a thought.

Choosing a ski holiday is a decision, that for most people, they will never regret and they return to for many years to come. A skiing holiday is not just about sliding down a hill covered in snow and occasionally rolling in it, in proper clothing of course, it is about a whole new experience. The resort itself is something that few would see in the course of choosing a holiday destination. The French ski resorts are renowned for their excellent skiing and snow conditions and although for the most part they are modern villages built in an alpine setting. Austrian Alpine resorts on the other hand are traditional villages which are lower in height than the French so snow conditions can be variable but they have an après ski that is renowned.

So what are the things that we should be looking for when deciding on a ski holiday? Most people would agree that you should choose a good ski holiday specialist, someone that has knowledge of the principal skiing areas, is well represented in the ski resort and is part of a major organisation such as fastrackski.co.uk which is part of the Virgin group. Your ski holiday company will arrange your ski passes, accommodation, ski school and après ski events and other items such as ski guiding. With most companies you will get a snow guarantee which means that in the event of lack of snow, they will take you to a nearby resort that has good conditions, which can often be the next valley just a few miles away.

Skiing holidays are now no longer restricted to a few resorts in the alpine region of Europe. Specialist ski holiday companies can arrange for you to holiday in the USA and Canada as well as some eastern European countries which are becoming increasingly popular and moderately priced. In addition, with certain companies it is possible to combine ski and sun which is achievable in the USA and Caribbean as well as the Sierra Nevada in Southern Spain, itself a popular ski resort. Contact your ski specialist holiday company and see just what fun you could be enjoying the winter.

The vast continent of Europe encompasses no less than 50 sovereign states, as well as seven non-sovereign territories and regions, and another six territories and regions that are partially recognised.

Europe borders Asia in the east at the Ural Mountains and the Caspian Sea, and in the south at the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea. Countries such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Georgia, and Russia are considered part of both Asia and Europe. The islands in the Mediterranean Sea are also considered to be part of Europe, as is Malta. The sovereign states, by definition, are political entities governing a geographical area that is bound by an institution of rules recognising its authority over that area in the form of the courts, armed forces, civil service, and police.

Some of the sovereign states in Europe are Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Boasting a total population of over 700 million inhabitants, Europe is home to a curious mix – or clash – of cultures, whose similarities and differences cover the areas of religion, philosophy, language, sport, art, etc. In addition to this, Europe has another grouping of sorts that crosses cultural lines, and this is the European Union. The EU is a union of 27 European member states, with another seven countries awaiting inclusion in this economically and politically powerful group. The EU includes in its force a membership of some 500 million people and generates an estimated 30% share of the nominal gross world product.
